I first noticed this in The Atlantic’s profile of Jordan Peterson, who I have no opinion about.https://amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/567110/ …

This is unduly cynical. Not having read the piece, I can already tell it's well-informed because the description is "What the Amazon founder and CEO wants for his empire and himself" — clearly they're going to cite his shareholder letters, public statements, track record, etc.
-
It’s a subtly-crafted negative narrative designed to give the reader the impression that the subject is bad, without bothering to name the reasons why.

This piece, however, was much more balanced and interesting. Also, didn't know about the Birkenstock saga. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/10/21/is-amazon-unstoppable …pic.twitter.com/AN0O5tPbsa

I feel like if you are comitted to being a journalist and making a rational economic calculation then getting good at "vague longform hit piece" is, in fact, the correct decision. Does not seem like the best hill to climb...

This article is weird as hell "[He wants to prevent] rationing and starvation" "Amazon is the embodiment of competence, the rare institution that routinely works." "As Trump runs down the country, Bezos builds things that function as promised." => rich man bad! (?????)

Hah! Thank you for putting words to this phenomenon. Definitely a trend, and I think the subtle implication is that if you can't pick up on the signals, you must not 'get the zeitgeist' enough to understand *why* XYZ is Bad.

Critique in this form is low hanging fruit rotting on the vine of content bloat. I Fight the urge to tweet in this articles style daily. Makes me so mad at my brain. Bur it’s too accessible - takes no real thought to serve up. Plus there is an audience mindlessly ready to eat.
