I'm not saying that we shouldn't hold for-profit sports to a high standard - just that if we do, we're going to be disappointed.
Not sure what has been more alarming this past week - the revelation that the multibillion dollar NBA would like to keep operating in the Chinese market, or professional athletes’ shocking lack of geopolitical awareness. I expected more from an entertainment organization.

I get the snark, but this organization and these athletes have repeatedly demanded to be held to a higher standard. Moralizing is annoying, but hypocrisy is even more annoying.

Definitely the first. The latter is just the old trope of athletes lacking knowledge, it is neither surprising nor relevant as being a professional athlete requires focus. Being a successful professional athlete requires focus and presents pleasant distractions.
