Generally means they were rich and white and male...but I do get your sentiment. The optics surrounding the pedigree of the higher education institution has changed significantly from then to now.
It’s interesting that when you read biographical accounts from the early to mid 1900s, it actually means something when the author mentions that they went to college literally anywhere.
