Yeah, I wish people understood that the value of their data is ~0 in isolation and even in the context of a product that uses that data, the graph of total value vs number of users is probably an S curve with a very steep middle.

Recently I've been thinking about our mostly unquestioned assumption that the provider of capital is the only residual claimant. So my data is worthless alone, but you combine it and generate value, do you deserve to capture all the generated value? I'm not sure.

That and a whole lot of intentionally misleading reporting - the constant metaphor of 'data is the new oil' is particularly irritating. Not even remotely similar.
