There is no limit to the things people around you want to make illegal.

This is because most people can’t differentiate between “I don’t think people should do this” and “this should be against the law.”

I'm going out on a limb here and saying more regulations are a necessary part of an increasingly specialized society. On the one extreme where everyone is a hunter/gatherer, everyone knows the same stuff everyone else knows, so "rules of thumb" are enough, because /1

either good ideas are conventional wisdom ("don't eat yellow snow") or literally *nobody* knows it (calculus). /2

The more specialized knowledge exists in a society, the more there will be occasions where some subset of the population knows something that's *important*, but unrealistic to try to get every last person to understand the reasoning behind. /3
