There’s a reason for the Historic Preservation board, and having that responsibility is something you’re made aware of when you buy the home — if you don’t enjoy it then find somewhere else.
The reason for historic boards is ostensibly to preserve historic buildings; the actual function is to mark buildings as historic.

In my experience they’ve regularly carried out their duty by levying strong fines for infraction. Regardless, my original point stands; the awareness of their presence at the time of purchase mitigates any feeling of undue burden they may induce.
