This is because most people can’t differentiate between “I don’t think people should do this” and “this should be against the law.”

I'm going out on a limb here and saying more regulations are a necessary part of an increasingly specialized society. On the one extreme where everyone is a hunter/gatherer, everyone knows the same stuff everyone else knows, so "rules of thumb" are enough, because /1

either good ideas are conventional wisdom ("don't eat yellow snow") or literally *nobody* knows it (calculus). /2

I’m still trying to figure out when the US became a nation of puritanical busybodies who have such armor surrounding their dogmatic beliefs that no original thought can pierce its way through. Depressing.

There also seems to be a healthy dose of the declining sense of personal responsibility with this mindset. People used to believe they could rely on themselves (and others) to mostly attempt to do the right things...not as much these days. Thus default to "police us, please!"

I'm frequently quoting from the 80s movie Overboard, where one of the kids says he appreciates his new stepmom being a domineering parent, because "she doesn't put up with any of my shit, I need discipline."

Long-term thinking, first principles, understanding of history, and more empathy would reduce the desire for more laws.
