Perhaps even more basic assumptions: 1) News media business models are built on garnering human attention 2) The shortest path to attention is emotional appeal Result: it would be odd if mass shootings were not a huge boon for news media

It's sad to think that newscasters used to view themselves as public servants of sorts, but no longer. I guess politicians used to view themselves that way too. We too often create and feed the monsters that plague us.

If news outlets have to rely solely on private money and are ran as businesses, it should be surprising that they do this. Public subsidies, government regulations, and being mandated as having public utility has had positive results in France. Check out
