Somewhat tangential, but my Chinese girlfriend says that Chinese people will get in a line when they don't even know what the line is for. They figure that if other people want it, they might want it, too.

I've always said this about New Yorkers—who *love* standing on line—for the: 1) Shared experience / tension / excitement, 2) Absence of responsibilities (except to maintain line order), and 3) Usable leisure time (catching up on texts, convo) en route to a status achievement.
