I will never understand why the Left and Right don’t unite to dismantle the USPS. Country’s largest polluter - 5.6 million tons of junk mail delivered by 200k+ gasoline vehicles. Government-subsidized direct mail offers prey disproportionately on low-income people.pic.twitter.com/XWEe5gnO9R

      1. Allow competitors to provide all the same services 2. Have USPS fund itself via user fees that reflect the true costs of delivery, rather than subsidies Those two things wouldn't "abolish" the USPS but it would force it to play by the same rules as everyone else 🤔

The USPS would be profitable if not for Congress meddling with its operations. Even with declining First Class volume, it makes a good bit of money operating as the "last mile" in the great online product supply chain. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-postal-service-is-operating-at-a-profit/2018/04/26/1300cfa6-48b2-11e8-8082-105a446d19b8_story.html … https://about.usps.com/news/national-releases/2018/pr18_093.htm …

Why should the government be operating a profit-generating business in the last mile delivery space?

Why does the government build roads to the last mile of every residence? Or public utilities?

Because roads wouldn't otherwise be built, and it would be difficult to facilitate competition with utilities because of proprietary infrastructure - neither of which apply to last-mile delivery.

I’ll bet the folks in Alaska, Hawai’i, Guam, Puerto Rico or just about anywhere rural would disagree. Having lived in Hawai’i and sent first class letters across the country for the same cost as across the street, the USPS does some amazing things.

That's a really, really nice service to have. Probably not worth the 5.6 million tons of junk mail per year delivered by 200k+ gasoline vehicles.

Probably not, but then the subsidies come from Congress, not the USPS (https://archive.org/stream/PostageSubsidiesForPeriodicalsCRSReportR40162/Postage%20Subsidies%20for%20Periodicals%20CRS%20Report%20R40162#page/n3/mode/2up …) so don’t go hating on the agency because our reps told it to be self sufficient, but not charge appropriately.
