LA’s problem is that some significant percentage of great people would never live there - similar to Austin.

I think that’s an overblown assumption. The people that dislike LA the most are the people that have spent the least amount of time in the nice parts.

But in seriousness: close promxity to the Bay Area (VCs don’t liken to admit it but they love LA), inexpensive flights, solid talent, great weather, access to outdoors, culture, etc.
