My problem with this line of argument is that it implies that locking up innocent people until they die of old age is ok.

Actually it does. The focus should be on innocent people getting convicted to begin with and not whether they are on death row or not. The spotlight needs to be turned onto District Attorneys and Judges who knowingly suppress evidence.
