It isn’t practical to stop lobbying...you can only flip it from legal to illegal. It is practical to simplify regulations to close loopholes, thereby limiting politicians’ ability to grant favors.

to return to your original tweet, i don't see how reframing the headline into a passive voice statement about the government is going to achieve that. fortune's readers understand that the government sets tax law

99.9% of people who read and share that headline are not Fortune readers, and don’t understand that.

99.9% of people... who read and share fortune links... don't understand the connection between government and law?

I do think the headline is misleading. Lets imagine the opposite. Just after the government passes a minimum wave law there’s an article with headline “XYZ Company raises wages, bringing the minimum pay to $15/hr!” Would that not assign undue credit?

It’s not uncommon to see bias in headlines. It’s all around us.

Also I think the left (of which I am a proud member) is unclear about when companies become evil. Small companies are great, Big companies are shitty. What about small companies that become big comabines (amazon, google, Uber, facebook) — What’s the shitty market cap threshold?

Would AOC have liked Amazon coming to Queens if it had zero tax incentives but still had some of the other questionable attributes eg. It’s impact on small retail business?

i think headlines like this are a kind of mirror. if you see "amazon pays a whopping $0 taxes" and think the problem is the journalism... well, i'm not sure what else to tell you. amazon does pay a whopping zero taxes. i guess i'm the %0.01 that doesn't fit into your narrative

I don’t know how else to say it: the problem isn’t journalism, or Amazon. The problem is the government’s ability to grant favors.

i don't know how else to say it, either: something being legal doesn't make it ok

People learn about the world through the lens of journalism. Phrasing matters and has bias.
