I wonder how different the conversation would be if editorial style guidelines dictated that headlines were written as “Government Assesses $0 in Federal Taxes to Amazon”http://fortune.com/2019/02/14/amazon-doesnt-pay-federal-taxes-2019/ …

Very different. Amazon lost money in their first X years and now those deferred losses cancel our recent profits. That’s the law, it actually kinda makes sense.

to zack's point, i don't think that changes the conversation. i have no doubt all their tax credits and loopholes are completely legal; that's part of my concern

Amazon is this administration’s most hated corporation; if you’re worried about them taking illegal deductions, I’m sure that will sort itself out shortly.

i was clear that it's their legal behavior that concerns me, and i see it as a political problem. i don't have to hate amazon to think they have an unfair advantage

Ah, I misread. My original point was: if you believe their tax strategy is legal, then reframing headlines would direct attention where it should be: at the government who is setting the tax code.

i think the headline is accurate and captures the situation perfectly, and it's naive to think amazon doesn't influence government policyhttps://www.wsj.com/articles/how-amazon-became-one-of-washingtons-most-powerful-players-1529509628 …

It isn’t practical to stop lobbying...you can only flip it from legal to illegal. It is practical to simplify regulations to close loopholes, thereby limiting politicians’ ability to grant favors.

to return to your original tweet, i don't see how reframing the headline into a passive voice statement about the government is going to achieve that. fortune's readers understand that the government sets tax law

99.9% of people who read and share that headline are not Fortune readers, and don’t understand that.

99.9% of people... who read and share fortune links... don't understand the connection between government and law?
