I think “Facebook broke democracy” is the most widely-believed conspiracy theory I’ve seen in my lifetime. Trying to think of others that come close?

Well I don’t think that’s a conspiracy theory as much as it is an opinion
I’m not sure it’s an opinion...assuming you had perfect access to information, couldn’t you state whether it is objectively true or false?

If you think it broke it because of a specific event (eg tampering) then yes. If you think it broke it because it changed a certain behavior (eg people became more extreme and pushed into echo chambers) then you have to decide if that’s a part of the system or not

I wouldn’t classify people getting more extreme as breaking of democracy. When I hear “Facebook broke democracy,” I assume that people mean it fundamentally corrupted the democratic process.
