On the other hand, 1) with some exceptions, MBAs are a terrible path to being a founder and 2) most ideas are bad and shouldn’t be pursued. https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2018/12/milennial-start-up/567793/ …pic.twitter.com/w2CQ6mDNx1

Unless you’re going to a top school, credentials don’t mean much and you can learn more by reading a handful of good books.

I think that viewpoint is overplayed and a bit outdated. MBA curriculums have evolved - I would estimate that a quarter of the material that we covered would have been helpful had I decided to do another startup. (granted, that was at a top school)

Would be interested to see data on success of startup founders from non-top-tier MBA programs.

Don't get me wrong, I think that an MBA from a non-top-tier program is often a waste of money (unless your job requires you to check a box). But I don't think that's unique to the MBA->founder route, I think it's generally true.

There was a really good YC podcast ep a while ago with @mwseibel & @bussgang talking about this - The biggest case for one in startup land is if a biz is innovating on a biz model vs an actual tech innovation. A worthwhile listen on the topic.

I'll hunt down the podcast. It's interesting that you posted this the week that @moderna_tx completed the biggest IPO in biotech history. @Cloudflare, @Shazam, and @MongoDB are just a few of the MBA founded unicorns that are built on "actual tech innovation".

I’m not saying that having an MBA means you can’t start a successful startup - I’m saying it doesn’t increase the odds. It likely decreases the odds you’ll start one because of the increased debt burden.

My reply was more targeted at @Jyannos statement that an MBA is helpful if the company is built on business model innovation and not helpful if the company is built on technical innovation.
