Seems like the publisher gatekeepers were suppressing variety, and self-publishing had ~0 chance of distribution. Now anyone can self-publish and consumers now get access to many times more books - of all quality levels.

Im all for lowering barriers to entry and gatekeepers. But a robust, well-edited, well-researched mid-tail (of authors still making a living) is vastly different from a long (often low quality) long tail.
