Publishers have acknowledged they don’t publish midlist authors or riskier books with anything near the frequency that they used to because of the way amazon promotes bestselling titles and popular authors.
Seems like the publisher gatekeepers were suppressing variety, and self-publishing had ~0 chance of distribution. Now anyone can self-publish and consumers now get access to many times more books - of all quality levels.
Im all for lowering barriers to entry and gatekeepers. But a robust, well-edited, well-researched mid-tail (of authors still making a living) is vastly different from a long (often low quality) long tail.
