I’m going to stop saying “safe travels.” Travel is safe.

Airplane travel is safe. More people die from cars than ever before

The absolute number is irrelevant in terms of safety. You have to look at deaths per vehicle-mile traveled, which is at an all-time low - down to ~12 per billion VMT from ~47 in 1970.pic.twitter.com/CC6YCMO3so

i thought you would be looking at global numbers, given people are traveling

Hard to find aggregate international numbers, but here's an example. Since cars are getting safer every year, it's hard to imagine from a first principles standpoint why the death rate per vehicle-km driven would be increasing. What am I missing?pic.twitter.com/QtKAvK8Y4t

Here is what you are missing. Automobile travel isn't safe, hasn't been safe and in the US is the leading cause of death among young adults. wish your friends safe travels.pic.twitter.com/btycOmEfUX

Those are the absolute # of deaths, which offers no useful information about safety. It's like saying "infant deaths are increasing," without taking into account that the population is increasing. Hard to define "safe," but you can unequivocally say that driving is getting safer.

“We have a long way to go in making driving safer” is a very reasonable thing to say. “More people die from cars than ever before” is misleading because the rate of death per vehicle miles driven is actually decreasing, as is death rate per capita.

I have a hard time taking you seriously if you are picking apart parts of my arguement in quotes and arguing on a relative basis when you lead with “travel is safe”

Let me try to rephrase. I don’t think the phrase “safe travels” is still relevant because of the infinitesimally small probability that you get hurt or killed while traveling, thanks to our continual march towards safer and safer means of transportation.
