I’m going to stop saying “safe travels.” Travel is safe.
Those are the absolute # of deaths, which offers no useful information about safety. It's like saying "infant deaths are increasing," without taking into account that the population is increasing. Hard to define "safe," but you can unequivocally say that driving is getting safer.

“We have a long way to go in making driving safer” is a very reasonable thing to say. “More people die from cars than ever before” is misleading because the rate of death per vehicle miles driven is actually decreasing, as is death rate per capita.
