I was reading King of Capital (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003E8AJXI ) this summer and thought the next generation of private equity would be buying inefficient firms, installing AI systems to radically lower their costs then selling the company on.
I like the idea, but no need for AI. Just set up Zendesk, Zapier, GSuite, Slack, Gusto, Flexport, NetSuite, etc and you'll blow it out of the water.

Hmm, those are all just basic productivity tools, you’d still need AI models for forecasting stockout, shelf availability, logistics cost optimization etc

I've worked a lot with Vista Equity Partners on some of their acquisitions and they have the 'BOS' method. Same technology stack, same implementation methodology, same change methodology. It works well most of the time and there are huge gains, e.g

However I would say I have seen the downsides of it (not just VEP acquis). Too much standardisation without consideration for the history of the company, not enough design centric thinking. For me its a tight rope of risk/reward...
