Irrelevant. It’s either do it, or build a substandard product that won’t dominate the market. There is no choice.
This is one of the main “advantages” that will destroy the automakers. Retrofitting yields a substandard product - it’s an amazing way to be first to market and a terrible way to be last to market. Retrofitting’s disadvantage is inversely correlated with the fixed investments in time and money to produce a new product from scratch. I’d say automotive is one of the industries where retrofitting is a not-so-bad approach.

Also, retrofitting penalizes product design but benefits product reliability.
