Antiquated medallion laws. It’s illegal to pick up off the street unless you’re a licensed taxi. Regulation hasn’t caught up with reality.

Emailed Uber once about it
Reasons could be:
1. No choice for Drivers to accept or decline incoming requests
2. Will need separate lines for taxis & each app (riders may not have multiple apps)
3. Uber Pool (need riders’ routes)

Another thing is algorithms can allow driver to choose direction they are heading - a random line would take away that control. Improvements to pickups have already stated with color matching etc
