I have a huge amount of respect for people who maintain the same pace when they notice you holding the door for them from 20 feet away.

You hold the door to someone as a gesture to make things easier. Most people then feel obligated to rush, which actually makes things harder for them. The rare person is comfortable accepting the gesture and just maintains pace.
