I prefer reading old books, but if I were to pick from only the 20th & 21st c. and readily available in English and in print, I'd pick these writers: H. Belloc, G.K. Chesterton, L. Mumford, K. Sale, E.F. Schumacher, I. Illich, A. De Saint-Exupéry, J. Lewis-Stempel, A.G. Street.
