I appreciate this new mandate to pause and reflect amidst our fast paced world. I might want to tweet now, but I can't. I have to stop and ask myself whether this is the tweet I really want to transmit into the world of the future.

Transit enriches the places and lives around it. It is a public good, and should be funded as such.
Quote Tweet
Our call to the state is not just a call to bridge the gap but also that we need more sustainable models of operating funds.
And this is not a BART-only or -induced issue. All Bay Area transit agencies face this crisis indiscriminately and totally.

Today, we introduced AB 413 to institute daylighting to improve public safety. CAโs pedestrian fatality rate is more than 25% higher than the national average. Daylighting is an important measure that increases visibility of pedestrians & bicyclists at crosswalks & intersections

Without additional relief funding for transit from the state, local transit agencies will need to pull together more money to stay afloat and avoid fiscal cliff cuts. Here's what San Francisco is looking at
Quote Tweet
Grim outlook at upcoming @SFMTA_Muni meeting. The Bay Area's largest transit agency faces a fiscal cliff and stagnating ridership. Policy options:
- Expanded meter hours on evenings and Sundays
- More parking tickets
- Fare hikes and cracking down on fare evaders

Our work suggests that *if we stay the course on a dense boosting frequency*, we may be able to build up nAbs to a more protective level. Dropping down to 1x/yr will pretty much guarantee that we run our nAb titers all the way down. (10/)

The CARES Act shortened the wait from 1 year (in the ACA) down to within 15 business days of the US Preventive Services Task Force recommending a COVID-19 preventive services. But I know of no signs of USPSTF considering COVID tests as potential preventive services.

IMO (see article below), CA regulators bear much of the blame for San Francisco's robotaxi problems.
Cruise, Waymo, etc face enormous pressure to deploy faster โ even if itโs unsafe. Strong regulation is essential -- and CA isn't providing it.

Many of these incidents involved โfrozenโ Cruise vehicles blocking street traffic, but there were other, critical problems too:
On 6/12/22 a Cruise vehicle ran over a fire hose in use at a fire
On 1/21/23 firefighters had to smash a Cruise car window to prevent a recurrence

i am genuinely terrified of what might happen if transit agencies go under
i really really hope the feds or the state figure it out
Quote Tweet
Interesting to see BART mention (new?) efforts to get operational funding from the feds in slides from tomorrow's board meeting. Is there new movement at the federal level? Everyone I've discussed bridge funding with has put the chance of more federal assistance at near zero.

Nearly one in three traffic fatalities in SF in 2022 were hit and runs.
More likely than not, the drivers responsible for these collisions will never be held accountable, and survivors are largely left to advocate for themselves.

Around the country, people are fed up with the state of contemporary building.
Yes, we desperately need new housing. But we also need to build that housing well, in ways that people can appreciate and will last for generations.

We understand the state is projecting a budget shortfall and that difficult choices must be made.
However, allowing the stateโs transit systems to unravel would have long-term, possibly irreversible, devastating impacts on Californiaโs transportation system and climate goals.

eSome interesting Shared Spaces numbers from the SFMTA Board meeting. There were 984 permit applications, of which 702 were parklets. 592 of those were renewals and 110 new applications.

There is almost no money in next yearโs budget for Long Covid. That billion is almost all gone with, yet, a single Paxlovid trial starting *just recently.* Thatโs it. Despite occasional good media articles, the attention isnโt there. This isnโt good. Needs a huge, focused push.
