When Conan exited The Tonight Show, he had a chance to leave some parting advice. His advice: "don't be cynical"
When I saw this, I was 18, and I was astonished that THIS, of all things, was how he ended it.
But, the older I get, the more I get it.

I really can't think of any "advice" that's had a bigger impact on me. 12 years later, and I still can't get this quote out of my head.

The cynical part I get. The “amazing things” bit is naive and/or cynical. Either way it makes it sound uninformed and paternalistic

Still remember him playing himself off with the guitar. Dignified exit imo.

I wonder if he really meant pessimism, not cynicism. You can be optimistic about many things, you can work hard and be kind, yet clearly see society and the majority of people in it for who they really are.
