But she still broke the law so....what’s the issue here? I like Bernie as much as the next guy, but the Bernie bros childish bitching about @PeteButtigieg is fucking pathetic. Don’t eat your own or something?

The issue is that we torture and imprison those who expose war crimes, and do nothing to the people who *commit* war crimes. Pete shouldn’t be “troubled” by this elementary moral principle.
-
Right, completely fair point on whistleblowers vs. war criminals. But what is the elementary moral principle? It is a troubling situation; Manning exposed something that needed exposed, but broke the law in the process. Troubling is exactly what the entire situation is.
-
The elementary moral principle is that we have a right to know the criminal actions of our government. She “broke the law,” but the law itself is broken, and I (along with virtually every human rights group) don’t find that troubling.
-
And on top of that, before she was ever convicted of anything, she was subject to what the U.N. special rapporteur on torture deemed “cruel and inhumane treatment” by the US military. *that* should be what Pete finds “troubling”
-
And I would agree, 100% she was treated horribly. Although I find it pretty laughable that you don’t think
@PeteButtigieg wouldn’t agree. Just because he didn’t explicitly state that point, doesn’t mean he thinks the opposite. -
If Pete was actually concerned with her treatment, why not say that when asked about Manning and Snowden? He made sure to say that what she did was wrong and go into those details, but makes zero mention of the horrific abuse, and that’s a tacit endorsement.
-
But it isn’t, that’s a completely illocgical statement. Reduce that to a syllogism that doesn’t require a huge logical leap to get there.

Mayor Pete worked for Naval intelligence, the sort of people who covered up what Manning exposed. That might explain his ambivalence, and suggests his commitment to government transparency might not be

His authoritarian steak is frightening to me. And probably also why people see him as a good foil to Donald Trump.
-
Yup. And they don’t get it. We don’t need to win Trump-inclined voters to beat Trump. The proper and only way to crush right wing extremism is with left wing extremism. They offer oppression. Don’t respond by offering oppression-light. Respond by offering liberation.
-
They are also delusional to think being a tough talking patriot / authoritarian will get Trump voters past the part about him being a gay who went to a fancy lad school like Oxford.

There is no such thing as a war crime when the US does it. It's been the same double standard since Jamestown.

@limpbiscuits123 more than just not intersectional enough ..... yikes -
Haven’t seen this to be fair, big yikes. I guess if there was ever a time to get rid of him it is now, plus I still think Bernie will be the nominee anyways. I just want Dems to unite behind a candidate with a good message and topple Trump
-
agreeddd but i feel like we shouldn’t fall into the “lesser of two evils” mindset that we had last time, we should b trying to actually find the best (and in many cases most intersectional) candidate while we’re at it yfm.. n u think it’ll b bernie? don’t wanna get my hopes up :/
-
I feel you, we should be looking for the best. Bernie has dominated fundraising, has a steady base of support from last time and he is the only dem using socialism in his vocab. Also seems more principled that the others, Harris, Warren and Beto are all over the place
-
i’d say warren is a good one to support too tbh. her policies she is putting out are solid. she’s my second after bernie, has a consistent message and focus too.

Obviously Chelsea Manning did a noble and brave thing, but it’s a slippery slope to grant clemency to those who cooperate with organizations operating in bad faith like Wikileaks
-
It’s not bad faith to report truthful news. It’s bad faith NOT to
-
Yeah. The only slippery slope here is punishing whistleblowers. And we’re so far down that slope.
