I've covered Elizabeth Warren on and off for 12 years. For the past few months, she has seemed almost unrecognizable to me. Last night she finally sounded like herself.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/real-elizabeth-warren-steps-up_n_5e4e0293c5b630e74c502a80 …

When Warren came to DC in 2009, it was for a job on a bank bailout oversight panel designed to be toothless. She made it a public forum for examining abuse and mismanagement, and she didn't pull her punches with other Democrats. Tim Geithner got the worst of it, and deserved it.

The reason she's a household name is because she hasn't backed down from fights with other Democrats, including President Barack Obama. She was his chief antagonist on trade:https://www.huffpost.com/entry/elizabeth-warren-tells-ob_n_7142850 …

She once led a Democratic revolt against a budget deal between Obama and McConnell that included a big regulatory giveaway to Wall Street -- and nearly shut down the government.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/how-a-gift-to-wall-street_n_6317868 …

When a bunch of Democratic Senators signed onto Donald Trump's bill to deregulate big regional banks, Warren attacked the deal. Her colleagues accused her of betraying them to build a brand. They were wrong; the bill was just bad.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/senate-democrats-banking-fight_n_5b188c89e4b09578259ed910 …

I don't know how any of this plays with primary voters this year. Democrats are scared. They're very sensitive about Obama and his legacy. They like other Democrats and don't like to see them fighting.

But Warren just isn't a kumbaya politician. She's a pugilist, and she's very good at it. That's why her debate performance last night was so impressive. She was doing what she does best, and Mike Bloomberg's campaign is in real trouble.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/real-elizabeth-warren-steps-up_n_5e4e0293c5b630e74c502a80 …

The unity message was a mistake. It hobbled her.

Wow - this is such a great example of our ideological priors shaping our understanding of tactics. I think it's obvious the mistake was tacking to the left in a vain attempt to win over Bernie supporters.

Last night reminded me of Warren grilling Wells Fargo Execs. I missed that.
