What evidence do you have for the sentence beginning "Good departments/..."?
The field is already self-correcting. Good departments/labs are clearing their eyes, caring less about paper count, seeing through the noise. Don't worry so much about the ICML deadline. Slow down, relax, try to do work you're proud of, submit when it's ready.

Yeah not really. Grant committees now expect many ML papers with astronomical citations since the bar is high. It's maybe sad but I wouldn't sugarcoat.

What are exactly the signals that the field is self-correcting? IMHO Publish-or-perish is at its highest in AI/ML since it's directly proportional to the number of researchers and the research speed of the field.
