Are you doing it in his classic mode? There's a known issue there.

I’ve been doing a lot of Joker vs Joker (level 9) with Smash Meters on for the last two days and I’ve never experienced it after dozens of Final Smashes.

This happens in classic mode. There's been a pattern of smash games crashing in classic mode when playing a brand new character dating back to smash 4 dlc. People just need to be aware of this and not play classic mode with brand new dlc until there's been a confirmed fix.

I think the bug comes from the FS kill being also the Game Set screen, so as non-Smash modes don't have that screen, it gets to there and doesn't know where to go afterwards. Hoping to see it patched soon.
