I'm an academic at heart, let me preface by saying that. However, you may find, as I did, that after so many years of primary, HS, undergrad, & graduate school that continuing onward in pursuit of a Ph.D. is not only counterproductive to a normal life but simply unaffordable.
I envy the prestige of the achievement, but I do not envy the student loan debts many Ph.D's accrue along the way. I can't imagine spending the next 15-to-30 years paying off hundreds of thousands in student loan debt. That debt is like an anchor holding them down in life.
Higher education has regrettably become unaffordable for so many people in the U.S. When you're forced to take out tens of thousands on top of federal student aid, there's a major problem there. I chose a different route, military tuition assistance while in the Service for my
A.A./B.S., & then used the Post-9/11 GI Bill for my M.S. after the Service. That's a smart way to go because when you can walk from it all with your degrees and zero debt, it is an indescribably happy feeling. Then, the sky truly is the limit & you can pursue your true potential.
My sons have participated in community college dual enrollment programs while in High School. The oldest received a scholarship to the community high school where he will earn his Associates in Computer Science. He has chosen to work in an entry level network job while..cont
His pursuit of a bachelors and pay it off as he goes. His other brothers have decided to follow this path. Life is but a blink. There are other ways to achieve success without becoming a nervous wreck and slave to student loans.

True. We need to consider "Peace of mind" too. Pursuing a PhD, one loses family life.
Right, there's a definite toll to be paid there. Don't get me wrong, I respect the PhD, but it's just not worth it IMHO.
