Today was Star Wars day in my Medievalism course. Students had a blast discussing the work of , , & on the movies, material culture, & nostalgia, & I felt obliged to forego my usual intro for a thematically appropriate intro crawl.

“When The Lord of the Rings was first published in Italian, in 1971, the latent politics of his stout-hearted heroes bubbled to the surface. Appearing when it did, The Lord of the Rings had an outsized influence on the Italian cultural scene."

Irish bogs are living time capsules, preserving sites and artefacts in a remarkable condition. Like this early medieval mill (c.650-850) that lay just inches below the surface. (Kilbegly, Co. Roscommon excavated in 2007).

February 1 is the feast day of St Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland’s patron saints. Medieval accounts of her miracles stress Brigid's association with food and hospitality, like her cow that could be milked 3 times in 1 day. BM de Valenciennes, MS 838 f. 63v.

This take on Brigid of Kildare continues to have so much traction, and yet is so wrong-headed and ahistorical. (And the contemporary congregation is the Brigidine Order, not the “Solas Bhríde Sisters”. I know this because they taught me.)

I don't always wield my professorial power in a dictatorial manner but when I do it's to get the students in my intro course to sing "Sumer is Icumen In" together. 🎶(They looked horrified but it's a good way to build community at the start of a semester)

The fact that UCC hid a 3000-year-old mummy under the floorboards of a lecture theatre on a campus where two and a half tonnes of uranium rods were being stored in a basement nearby and DIDN'T end up with a zombie-pharaoh apocalypse is both a mystery and endlessly disappointing.
