I disagree with the point about self-reported data. Subjective self-report is complex and in sleep is indicative of something even if it is not well correlated with objective sleep

It would be arrogant of us to presume that when people say they slept x hours we do not get useful data about something. We just don’t know what it is

But we didn’t know how to measure REM sleep either until mid 20th century. Why would we assume we’ve got sleep pinned down by objective measurement?
