East Coast America is about as dense as Europe. You don't need a national and completely connected system, no one will ever take a New York-LA train no matter the speed.

They key is density and demand, not distance
It being to big has nothing to do with it, America has already had a coast to coast train system, the problem is is funding and regulations from each state.
