Some news: We’ve just released a blueprint states can use to craft reforms that make redistricting fair and gerrymandering a thing of the past. It’s (1) a model commission bill and (2) an accompanying annotated guide. . 1/5

Today is the anniversary of a massive school boycott in NYC 1964. 460,000 students stayed out of school to protest school segregation and racial discrimination in the city's schools

Notice the regional outlier, which consolidated power to larger districts during Reconstruction as a means of ending black (local) control of government. More jurisdictions would mean greatly likelihood of black self-determination. The past is anything but past.

Regardless of what happens with any of these efforts, it's crystal clear where the people stand. And, folks, your friendly redistricting counsel loves to see it.

On the horizon: Other states like VA, IN, PA have promising ongoing legislative efforts. Plus, citizen initiatives are pending in OK, AS, OR, and NV. In other words, more updates soon. Hats off to the grassroots activists who turned into a lasting movement.

More news: Wisconsin. Yesterday, Gov. Evers took executive action to try to bring independent redistricting to his state. The state's legislative maps are very aggressive gerrymanders. This move may help avoid more of the same in 2021. Read more here:

It doesn't change the structure of the existing, politically appointed 2D and 2R commission, but transparency and meaningful public input go a long way toward fair districts. And this bill proposes very strong measures.

Next up: Washington, my home state. HB 2575, which would improve transparency and opportunities for the public to participate in the redistricting process, may be voted out of committee today. Here's a breakdown of how it would work:

HB 1665 is a strong bipartisan bill, but its path is uncertain. A nearly identical bill passed with overwhelming support last year, but was vetoed by Gov. Sununu. It's disappointing because it's a smart policy. Here's a breakdown of how it'd work:

Also when the very idea of public goods - public housing, schools, transportation - became associated w/ Black & Latinx ppl. The racial narrative that has been deliberately attached to public goods post-BrownvBd ushered in the devastating societal embrace of privatized goods.

10 years ago, before Citizens United, super PACs didn't exist. In 2016 they raised more than $1 billion, 16% of all federal election fundraising. New from & me:

A rare proposal by Republicans intended to help them win elections by making them more democratic as opposed to less (via higher & likely more demographically representative turnout). Every state should do this, including Dems in New Jersey & Virginia
