At age 18, I began working at Uber as a software engineer. I arrived in the bay area for the first time with less than $100 in my bank account. I was on crutches and couldn't walk the entire summer. I only knew one guy in the entire bay area.

During the internship, I worked ALL the time. I was dealing with an intense depression. Whenever I wasn't working, I was gripped with vivid suicidal ideations. I was in so much pain that I could barely sleep for the first month I was working, and had no painkillers.

It was the worst time in my entire life, and simultaneously the realization of a dream I had worked towards since I was 13.

"It’s an extremely difficult thing to do, because at times, it made you angry that life has a special capability to kick you so much more when you’re down." It took me a long time to gain enough maturity to accept and process this anger. I still struggle sometimes.

Hearing your story makes me feel blessed that my banal circumstances occurred as they did. The night can always get darker.
