I lived in the Tenderloin. I'd crutch to work a mile there and back every day. The entire time, I was terrified that a crazy person on the street was going to hurt me. I was so vulnerable.

That was a very painful period of my life. I'm glad to have processed it. The last three years of my life have gotten increasingly stable and productive. It hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it.

"It’s an extremely difficult thing to do, because at times, it made you angry that life has a special capability to kick you so much more when you’re down." It took me a long time to gain enough maturity to accept and process this anger. I still struggle sometimes.
