At age 18, I began working at Uber as a software engineer. I arrived in the bay area for the first time with less than $100 in my bank account. I was on crutches and couldn't walk the entire summer. I only knew one guy in the entire bay area.

During the internship, I worked ALL the time. I was dealing with an intense depression. Whenever I wasn't working, I was gripped with vivid suicidal ideations. I was in so much pain that I could barely sleep for the first month I was working, and had no painkillers.

I lived in the Tenderloin. I'd crutch to work a mile there and back every day. The entire time, I was terrified that a crazy person on the street was going to hurt me. I was so vulnerable.

That was a very painful period of my life. I'm glad to have processed it. The last three years of my life have gotten increasingly stable and productive. It hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it.
