The advice: “be true to yourself” is irresponsible and lazy. What if your “Self” lacks integrity, vision, compassion, or drive? Most of us lack at least one of these things. Being true to a broken Self leads to a broken world. Rather, build a Self that itself builds worlds.

A number of philosophies also declare that there is no “self”. It is an imaginary friend we put into place and embellish to better navigate this world. How can you be true to something that you’re making up?

Yes! It’s only a tool but we tend to forget that and give it too much power. Case in point “being true to your self “.
