I finally have an answer to one of my longest running questions: why are smart people also especially sensitive? It’s because abstract thinking requires intuitive sensing, since details are abstracted away Intuitive sensing overlaps with emotional sensitivity

There's also a high overlap between tendency to struggle with mental health challenges, since that high degree of emotional sensitivity can be overwhelming if the capacity isn't there to hold and process.

What’s your recommendation to expand one’s capacity?

That's a big question. It requires training, like physical stamina or metabolic fitness. The most effective tools I've found are breathwork (to open up and expand our nervous system) + a regular meditation practice (cultivating the non-judgemental witness of emotions)

In one sense capacity can be measured by the time it takes from shifting out of fight/flight (reactive re-enforcement) into parasympathetic (and enquiring into the nature of the stressor)

But equally important, is building a support network of strong relationships, a sense of purpose, nourishing food and good sleep all increase our capacity and the degree of stressors that we can absorb.

I interviewed the clinical breathworker Ed who had interesting definitions on resilience and capacity from the perspective of the nervous system:https://podcast.curioushumans.com/episodes/how-we-breathe-is-how-we-think-building-resilience-curing-anxiety-and-healing-trauma-with-edward-dangerfield …
