I think this “sail adjustment” is our main conscious tool to exercise free will. The rest, like you say, is best with flow & full present experience — with a quiet default mode network unable to direct our minds into distracting, self-referential, time-hopping thought loops.

It’s interesting to think about how we think when alone, or here typing & articulating, or when talking face to face, or in a big group — etc.
