Along the theme of my original tweet I doubt most folks that are restoring classic cars are really making a profit either, they're doing it because it's something they enjoy and they have an emotional connection to the car.

I would concur. I got cited in Usenix for helping to restore a version of Unix older than C: https://static.usenix.org/events/usenix09/tech/full_papers/toomey/toomey.pdf … Since that was presented, even older versions have surfaced from Bells Labs folks. Which I find neat. $ I made from any of that? $0.00.

I feel like a timeshare scheme on retro equipment is where I want to go next.

We sort of offer that at The MADE. $12 admission, open 3 days a week. There are also annual memberships. Gear going back to at least the 1970s. It's not lucrative though. A registered 501c3 non-profit. I help attorneys with prior art recreations to keep the lights on. ;-/
