The Hong Kong government has called for "solidarity" & for people to "put aside their political differences" to fight the pandemic. But it's also been a time of mass arrests, incl. the biggest police swoop on high-profile activists in recent memory today:https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/18/world/asia/hong-kong-arrests.html …

Martin Lee, 81, who helped draft the Basic Law, has defended activists in court incl. those arrested today. He said he had no regrets in joining them as a defendant. “I am proud to finally have a chance to continue on this path to democracy with these fine young people of HK."

His comments are striking because he was sometimes dismissed by younger activists as too moderate. He told me last year, with some self-deprecation:pic.twitter.com/PI7Eg7R0zP

A Beijing advisor said the arrests today represented an early step toward a broader crackdown: “After the fourth plenum, Beijing is determined to end the chaos in Hong Kong once and for all."

Lawyer Margaret Ng, 72, who like Lee was charged for the 1st time in her life, said she happened to be "doing my homework" when she learned about her impending arrest (ie. reading the book "China's National Security: Endangering Hong Kong's Rule of Law?")https://twitter.com/XinqiSu/status/1251407565117747206?s=20 …

Since June, over 7,500 HongKongers are arrested, countless are injured and disappeared, there’s now way we would give up now. Despite brutal suppression, we won’t surrender. #FightForFreedom #FreeHongKongpic.twitter.com/9AURQorbXp
