If you don't see an org on that list in your state, you can also donate books directly to prisons, or to national orgs. The ALA has a helpful rundown here:https://libguides.ala.org/book-donations/bookstoprisons …

This wording is confusing - it is donating to prisoners, not prisons. We do not work with the prisons, and they usually work against us and make the work of sending books increasingly difficult.
-
It is done in solidarity with people who are incarcerated, not to help prisons do a better job at imprisoning/justifying their existence. Donating to prison libraries is no assurance that prisoners will ever see those books for many reasons, so we send them directly to prisoners.

I think this is a great article and suggestion,
@DiamondsintheLi ! I just wanted to clarify this, as I'm involved in one of the organizations listed. I actually had not heard of a few of the organizations you listed so thank you for that too! - 1 more reply

Oh smart!! I am sick of donating to Goodwill/friends of the library because so often they go to employees or hoarders and not people who "need it." I have a box right now!

Okay, but like, why specifically the autobiography of Malcolm X?
-
It's a thought-provoking or life altering book for most who read it. Malcolm Little who eventually evolved into Malcolm X did time in prison & many people relate to his journey. It's a very popular book.

I wish I'd known about donating to prison libraries the last time I moved! I gave away 90% of my books.

I held all my clothes and am set to donate the ones that didn’t spark joy. I said thank you as they went in the bag
