We also looked at NMTC projects by what the credits actually funded. The two most common types were manufacturing and retail.
Our estimated “effects” by type aren’t very precise but certainly don’t make NMTC look any better. 8/11

it isn’t clear that any of these benefits accrue to the residents that lived in the neighborhood before the development occurred. Instead, we see increases in college-educated residents in tracts with NMTC projects. 7/11

We found that neighborhoods that get NMTC projects see more economic activity (number of biz and jobs) after a project. And poverty rates in those neighborhoods decline. But, 6/11

Also: cut for space since colleagues have already written extensively (urban.org/renters-and-re) -- tax credits for renters are NOT the immediate response needed to help renters during the COVID crisis.

It's not clear that tax credits for renters are the best solution, my guess is they are the most likely and therefore warrant further examination.
