You can code Kotlin anywhere and compile through Gradle in the terminal, yeah. But you might find it unavoidable to once in a while open Android Studio. I once coded a for-customer Android app in Xtend (Kotlin cousin) entirely in Sublime Texy

I have a workflow that works well for me. Dedicated IDEs for specific languages aren't a part of that.
