I wonder if you could speed it up further by taking more control of the stdout buffering. Probably a bunch of fiddling could be done there.

We played with that. The fastest ended up being buffering _everything_ (BufWriter flushes when it drops) and then just writing in one go. Stdout is line buffered in Rust by default as well.
