Except it's not a person inviting you to something, but a commercial entity that's put you on a mailing list without consent. That's covered by current EU spam laws. Unsolicited email sent in bulk is literally the definition of spam.
ohhh, sorry - so someone you know invited you to join their network? One off emails should be fine then, but they have no authority to sign you up for a mailing list (which is then automated, as in: sent by the company). Not in the past, but definitely not under GDPR.
