Browsers are useful for sandboxing untrusted code / streamlined distribution model. However, the most notable trade-off is a lack of access to native IO. Sometimes you have apps that wouldn't work well in a browser. Figuring out how to do that well is a fun challenge in itself.
They're mostly complementary tbh.
