120 euros for a 4 day conference is how you cater to the community. 60 euros if you're a student. Inclusivity is about trying hard not to exclude people. Making sure tickets are affordable is a great starting point.https://ti.to/asquera-event-ug/rustfest-paris-2018 …

And well yeah, there's people that can't afford 120 euros / aren't a student. There's a diversity fund just for this. Imo conferences should NEVER be priced above 50% of local rent. Paris seems to be ~1000-1500. This is reasonable. Even reasonable if you're on Berlin rent.

Sorry, let me rephrase that. COMMUNITY conferences should never be priced beyond what's affordable by regular folks. Being an exclusive, premier conference is fine. But be honest about who you cater to.

I agree with this, but this is also at odds with what people now *demand* community events cover in terms of speaker expenses and diversity scholarships. Cheap events are very difficult and a lot of the tradeoffs we used to make to get them to happen just aren't allowed anymore.

Yeah, definitely sounds tricky! But I think my point is: it's okay to operate at any scale / run a conference however you think is best, but be honest in your messaging. I guess it's yet another thing to think about, but do feel it's an important one!

Everything is a trade-off. My primary concern though: sponsorship is drying up for smaller events. The money you could bring in outside of ticket sales has gone way down. Yet, expectations have been set in an era where events were massively subsidized by sponsorship.
